In 2004 Connecticut launched HMIS in three pilot communities of Danbury, Hartford, and Bridgeport. The following year data entry into HMIS went statewide. Since that time, this statewide database has collected client demographic, service usage and length of stay information on over 48,000 unduplicated clients as of 12/31/2009.
Beginning in 2008, CT HMIS data began being used to provide invaluable information on homelessness in our state, and analysis of the effectiveness of current efforts to prevent and end homelessness. Aiding advocates helping preserve State funding to homeless services.
Also in 2008 the Connecticut Department of Social Services expanded the use of HMIS from just HUD from programs but to all Emergency Shelters, Transitional and Supportive Housing programs funded by the State of CT.
As the system continues to grow, and data quality continues to improve, our data will become more reliable and the uses more diverse.
